The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 also known as the Triple Talaq Bill, was passed in the Rajya Sabha on July 30, 2019 (Tuesday). The ruling party of India, the Bhartiya Janata Party managed the number of MPs in favour of the Bill, which is purportedly introduced in conformity with the Judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India titled Shayara Bano v. Union of India.

The Hon’ble Supreme Court passed the judgment in 2017, whereby it declared Talaq-e-biddat as unconstitutional with a majority of 3:2. The other 2 type of recognized divorces under the the Muslim law are Talaq-e-Ahsan and Talaq-e-Hasan.

The Triple Talaq Bill was introduced in the Parliament by the Law Minister of India Shri Ravi Shanker Prasad on July 21, 2019 and was passed in the Lower House of Parliament (Lok Sabha) on July 25, 2019 and in the Rajya Sabha on July 31, 2019.
